A newsletter of small, unremarkable places

The Wander Post

One dispatch a week, filed from wherever the slow route stopped. No recommendations. No lists. Just what was there when we arrived.

We rode the trains nobody photographs, waited at the platforms with no departure board, and wrote down what we saw before we forgot it. That’s the whole newsletter.

Rural platform

The 6:14 to Trieste was empty except for a man reading a timetable he already knew by heart.

No announcement board, no café. A vending machine sold instant coffee and nothing else. It was the best coffee of the trip.

Rows of empty blue and white bus seats lit by daylight through the windows.

Route 14 bus

The bus took the long way through three villages that weren't on the printed schedule. The driver stopped for his mother at the second one.

Nobody else got on. The seats were blue vinyl, patched twice.

Worn stone steps, the centre of each tread hollowed smooth by centuries of use.

Church steps

Six hundred years of feet had worn a dip into the third step from the top. A woman swept it anyway, out of habit more than need.

Via Roma

Half the shopfronts were shuttered for the afternoon, the other half for good. A single parked car sat outside the one that used to sell fish.

Someone had chalked the day's closing time on the metal, then never opened again.

A washing line strung between buildings, laundry hanging in still air.

Rear courtyard

Laundry hung across the gap between two buildings, close enough that neighbours could pass a cup of coffee across without leaving their windows.

An empty two-lane road winding toward low hills under flat, overcast light, telephone poles running alongside.

N-road out of town

No traffic for eleven kilometres. The light was flat and grey the whole way, the kind that makes everything look like it was photographed forty years ago.

The 6:14 to Trieste was empty

It was empty except for a man reading a timetable he already knew by heart. The conductor didn’t check tickets until Villa Opicina, and by then the fog over the karst had burned off into flat white light. Nobody photographed it. There was nothing to photograph — that was the point.

“The station buffet at Nova Gorica closes at nine. We didn’t know that until nine-oh-one.”
  • A funicular in Kutná Hora that runs on request only, by a hand-written sign.
  • The 42-minute wait for a border-crossing bus that never announces itself.
  • Where to stand on the platform at Ljubljana so the 6:14 stops in front of you.

Until the next platform,

— Marek, on the road
